When we come into this world, we are but gems in the rough

As we pass through life

We are shaped by many things

In the early years, we are shaped by our surroundings

And that sets us on our path

But as we grow, we learn to use the tools within ourselves

And we begin to shape ourselves

But sometimes our hands are unsure

For we have been shaped by outside influences

Some of us are able to undo that which has set us in other directions

Reshaping ourselves into that which we know should be

Eventually, as life passes, and after many hands

As we have shaped ourselves

From few to many facets

Some are flawed

From hands unsure

And of them I have known many

And I have tried to help guide their hands

To use the tools to turn those flaws into beauty

For some I was able to help

Others...

I have failed

And because of those failings

Mine own hands have become unsure

For we should never stop trying to shape ourselves

And I shall never stop

Nor shall I ever stop trying to guide other's hands

The one facet of myself that I can't change

And there are those that have unwavering hands

And soon transform from rough gems to glistening jewels

As I have gone through life

I have been graced with knowing those jewels

Though rare and exquisite

They have brought me joy

And also sadness

For they were never mine

To have and cherish
